Major League Baseball Draft

The major league baseball draft is conducted each year during the first week of the month in June and last for three days.

All 30 major league professional baseball organizations will make one selection in each round for fifty rounds until all the players on the baseball draft boards are selected. By the end of the draft a total of approximately 1,600 players will be selected.

The number of players selected in the major league draft is a very small percentage when compared to the number of players eligible for the draft.

When you look at the bigger picture of things their are more than 15,000 players who are draft eligible each year and some of the players who don't get drafted may sign a free agent contract after the draft is over.

Most of the players drafted during the major league draft are approximately 18 to 22 years old and they all will be given an opportunity to see if they can make it to the next level which is the “major league baseball” level. Polished baseball players will most likely get drafted during the major league baseball draft. Hopefully some of them will make it to the majors, but "not all" will make it there. By the time the majority of these major league baseball draft players reach the age of 20-27 years old and in some cases they will be 30 years old before they ever make it to the major's.

By that time many of them would have watched several younger players get called up to the major league level passing them up. Man that has to be the hardest thing to watch someone pass you and go to the majors who are 7-10 years younger than you.

Now, do you understand why I’ve been telling you that it’s very important to work hard and to get a personal baseball trainer starting at the tee ball level?

Most of the players who get selected in the major league baseball draft are more polished baseball players and they can come from high schools, no schools, colleges and other parts of the world.

These players all will be playing professional baseball starting at the minor league level which is the farm system (A,AA and AAA baseball) with AAA being the high level that you can reach before going to the show major league baseball (MLB).

What If I Don't Get Drafted

Players who was not selected in the June, mlb major league draft can still sign a professional baseball "free agent contract" if they are from no school, a junior colleges, have finished high school or college, or after their junior year of college.

Most players who don't get drafted after their junior year of college go back to college for one more year. However, if you're a college senior your only option is to "sign as free agent" if you don't get drafted.

Also, if you don’t get drafted out of high school or college you can still tryout for a major league baseball teams just go to one of their baseball camps and from their baseball projections and an evaluation of your baseball talents can be conducted by the team area scouts.

The major league baseball scouting bureau and major league baseball conducts tryout baseball camps in major city throughout the USA each year before and after the draft and the tryout camps are open to everyone in most cases.

Often, time players are signed to a free agent contract out of these camps and some players have gotten drafted because they participated in one of the tryout camps before the major league baseball draft.

Major league baseball mainly draft players from try-out camps, high school or college level players and sign players from independent baseball leagues.
