Batter Plate Coverage

Batter plate coverage is the one thing that you should address once you step into the batters box. Make sure that you have the plate covered with your bat, so that it want matter where the pitch is thrown in the strike zone you will be able to cover the entire area with your swing.

I find that hitter plate coverage is one of the problem that you need to correct, specially when it come to youth baseball players. Little leaguers have a bad habit or tendency to pull off pitches by stepping backward before swing at a pitch.

When you swing stepping back you can't cover the outside half of the plate with your bat. By stepping back when you swing this causes you to pull off balls thrown on the outside half of the plate. It also, causes your front foot, hip and shoulder to fly open as you stride to make contact with the pitch with your front foot landing on the ground with your toe pointing at the pitcher.

If your hip and shoulder is open before you swing the bat you will have no power remaining in your swing and the only thing that will be left in your swing is your arms and that not good for a hitter at any level of baseball. By keeping your front side close (foot, hips and shoulders) you will put yourself in a good batter plate coverage position by not stepping back when you swing.
