Level Baseball Swing

I hear coaches tell kids in order to hit a baseball you must have a level baseball swing. But, what I realize is that coaches don't explain to kids exactly what he/she really mean when the say take a level swing at the baseball.

This causes confusion for kids causing them to believe that they should only swing at pitches that crosses the plate about chest/waist high the area where a hitter will most likely get a level swing angle, but they don't swing at pitches that require various bat angles such as the low strike zone.

Coaches should spend time explaining to kids what "bat speed" and having a "level baseball swing" means.

To held with some of the confusion for little leaguers here is my definition of a level swing. A level swing is any swing angle of a batter swings that makes contact with a thrown pitch for a strike and the batter places the bat on the baseball making solid contact". The reason why I use the word swing angle is because pitches enter the strike zone at various angles not all pitches are straight down the middle on a level angle.

By having a control baseball swing with a slightly upward swing a hitter will be able to swing the bat through the hitting zone at various bat angles to make contact with different type pitches thrown for strike high or low, but the hitter must be able to see the baseball first before they can hit it.

  1. When the hands of a hitters starts to low (say below the ribs) often times this causes the hitter to upper-cut the ball by getting under it.
  2. When the hands of the hitter starts to high (say above the shoulders) often times this cause the hitter to under-cut the ball.

The hands should be anywhere from chest to shoulder high remember Bad Baseball Habits are hard to break.

Another bad habit is to swing stepping back which all little league baseball players do, but with the property training these habit can be corrected early.
