Don’t Swing Stepping Back
When you swing stepping back indicates that you are afraid of the baseball so you bail out when a pitch is thrown on the inside half of the plate. If you are a right handed hitter who's trying to pull the baseball down the left field line you maybe stepping back for that reason and for that reason only. It's the same if you were a left hand hitter who step back to pull the ball down the right field line.
If you are stepping back to swing at a pitch no matter where the pitch is thrown you have a bad baseball habit and this must be corrected. One way you can correct this habit is to place a rag behind and slightly in front of your front leg.
To help you correct this problem take a level baseball swing and when you start your
swing stepping back
stop your swing so you can see where your front foot is landing on every pitch thrown to you. This way you can see how you are pulling off every pitch thrown to you especially on outside pitches.
If you are step back before swinging the bat you should convince yourself that it's safe to step toward the pitcher and if a pitch is thrown inside then you should protect yourself by stepping back and away from the pitch or by turning your body toward the catcher and away from the pitch while at the same time protecting your head and chest area from being hit by the pitch.
Not only is stepping back on every pitch a bad baseball habit for you once a pitcher realize that you step back before starting your swing he will throw you pitches on the outside corner of the plate and he will make a living off you until you learn how not to step back before swinging the bat.
